Grand Rapids Arts has redone its website with an eye to keeping Grand Rapids Area audiences in the loop about upcoming arts events. First off just some ramblings. Katie Benes, Marketing at the Reif Center, had the supreme pleasure of driving Loretta Swit of Mash-fame back to the airport today after her performance as Eleanor Roosevelt last night on the Reif stage. Katie, a big Mash fan, was thrilled. You can now ask her about Loretta’s favorite Mash episode. Reports are Loretta is a lovely, soft-spoken lady.
Musicians of the Itasca Orchestra and Strings Program are primed for the all Gershwin/Copland concert on May 11. They keep hearing that friends, family and lovers of orchestral music are not going to miss this one. The guest artist, Eric Himy. comes highly recommended by ISO conductor Keith Swanson, who heard him perform his Gershwin in Paris and cannot say enough about it. Himy will do Gershwin in Paris at the concert along with Rhapsody in Blue from Gershwin’s original manuscript, which is a bit longer than the original.
Also I love going to the W (VFW Club) on Wednesday night. It is a real jazz club in downtown Grand Rapids. Manager Randy Oberg has turned the back of the Club to an intimate space. The acoustics are great, the music superb and the company of friends of great music cannot be beat (a pun there?). Try it: 7 – 9 pm. Hats off to Sam Miltich for bringing great musicians from far away to our little hamlet.
